Metabolic Syndrome

METABOLIC SYNDROME

Dr. Naveed Sattar published the results of a five year study that followed 5000 men for five years to asses the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and diabetes. The men that met the criteria of metabolic syndrome were 76% more likely to develop CHD and diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in five adults in the United States already has metabolic syndrome and the numbers will continue to increase. The syndrome is linked to a metabolic disorder called insulin resistance in which the actions of insulin are impaired. Other studies have shown that people with metabolic syndrome have blood that tends to clot more easily and are more likely to produce artery-closing plaque.

The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome is a cluster of at least three out of five of the following risk factors:

Waist circumference
>35 inches for women
>40 inches for men
Triglyercides
>150 mg/dl
HDL cholesterol
<50 mg/dl
Blood Pressure
>130/>85 mm Hg
Glucose
>110 mg/dl

Treatment for the metabolic syndrome is primarily physical activity and weight loss. In some cases medication may be necessary to treat high blood pressure and to lower LDL cholesterol.

Health Promotion Affiliates is offering a screening to help identify metabolic syndrome and to encourage those employees to see their doctors.

The participants will have a Fasting Lipid Profile with Glucose, which includes Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, and Cardiac Risk Ratio.

Participants will receive educational materials on lowering risk factors with a focus on weight loss and exercise.

Companies can follow-up with weight loss and exercise programs from Health Promotion Affiliates. The Step Into Fitness Walking Program has been very successful and popular at all the companies where it was implemented.
